Writing a narrative
essay helps students to improve their writing skills which is important in
school. Today’s narrative essay will base on the short story, “The Cask of
Amontillado.” written by Edgar Allan Poe. The short story addresses the theme
of unlawful revenge. Poe writes about Montresor, who sought revenge against his
friend, Fortunato. Montresor lured Fortunato into believing that there is wine
in Montrosor’s family’s tomb only to entomb him (Fortunato) alive. Emotions of
fear and horror grasp the reader throughout the story.
Students may be
presented with the following tasks:
1. Choose one of the following topics for your narrative essay.
In the short story, "The Cask of Amontillado," the reader is never told what the exact insult was that caused
Montresor to seek revenge against Fortunato. Write to tell what happened before the story begins in "The
Cask of Amontillado."

question 1 and came up with the following narrative essay
The Cask of Amontillado
The cold metal restrained me to the
wall where Montreso had tied me, my body froze to a point where i was so weak
to move, every sound I heard were so faded, my vision was blurred as I breathed
like a dying chicken. My brain sensed nothing wrong with it because I was
peacefully drunk. On sobering up, i realized that i was in danger, the burning
torch that Montresor threw to my feet was burning as smoke engulfed me with suffocation.
Struggling, twisting and moving my fingers until finally i was freed but with
little injuries. I fast moved the chains from my hand and the ones on my head
and feet. Finally, I was freed now to begin looking for a way to escape,
because I had a very large obstacle ahead of me. First, I sent off smoke from
the burning torch using my cap to beat away the smoke, to get some free air and
maintain my breath. I took a deep breath and began moving my heavy body towards
the wall created with stone piles.
In his haste, Montresor did not
securely bolt the hole he locked me into, I easily kicked the stones out and
began crawling through a tight space that was available. I suddenly found
myself outside and was eager to tell everyone my story, including the police, but
my partying kind of life did not allow me to report, since the police could
find more cases on me. It was not an ideal life. Later on i realized that tit
for tat is a fair game. I thought of an idea of how i can trick my murderer
since Montreso did know that he successfully pulled me down with no witnesses
and evidences. I was already proclaimed missing and i decided to take an
advantage of the bones on the floor. I picked the pile of bones and threw them
inside the hole they emerged from so as to seem as there was a dead body in it,
a body that has taken long since its burial. I then tossed in my cap on the
bones to at least make it more evident that i was no more. I then rearranged
the stones that Montreso used to bolt me in the hole, leaving them as they were
before i kicked my helpless self out. I tried cleaning the dusty areas to prove
there was no any break out or anything untouched. That is how I covered up
everything before I made another move.
How will Montreso take this? Will he
forgive me or he will plan another evil attack on me? I asked myself these. Later,
I managed to make a phone call directly to Montreso telling him am alive, I
sensed a chill of fear in his voice as he murmured in shock, i heard movements
guessing that was him eagerly checking by the hole he kept me locked in. He the
stammered on the phone I had been holding on for some time, furiously telling me
okay then hanged up. Montreso called my number after a while and cautioned me
with anger. I shouted at him to stop, that is when he realized it was a living. “I will be at your place tomorrow to prove to
you i am so alive. I know I hurt you so bad that you wanted me dead but you
never succeeded". Montreso with a low tone apologized and begged me not to
tell anybody about this. I swore to him I will keep that between us as a secret
and never to hurt one another again.
