                                                              The Long Way Home

The book, “The Long Way Home: An American Journey from Ellis Island to the Great War” talks about millions of immigrants who moved into the United States in the end of 19th and at the beginning of 20th centuries. Laskin who was also the author of prize winning history “The Children’s Blizzard” talks about the story of twelve immigrant heroes. During the First World War, 2.5 million soldiers of the United States went into the battle to fight for their country and among them were immigrants. Approximately half of the soldiers were immigrants which means out of every group of five soldiers one was an immigrant soldier including the twelve immigrant heroes (Laskin 12). The long way home, therefore, focuses on the twelve immigrant heroes and the struggle of American soldiers during the First World War to achieve a peaceful Nation.
The author, Laskin is an American writer and was born on 25th of October 1953 IN New York. He went to school at Harvard College and New College. He also went to study at Oxford before starting to work with editorial department of Bantam Books. Later, he became a freelance writer writing articles and books concerning different subjects such as weather, travel, history, literary biography, natural world and gardens (16). His love for writing made him to become one of the contributors in New York Times Travel Section. Besides, Laskin’s devotion to writing enabled him to write for Seattle Metropolitan, the Seattle Times, and Washington Post.  He has a wife called O’Neill with three daughters who they live with at Seattle. As a writer, Laskin has written many books and articles such as: The Reading Group Book, Four Generations of American Literary Friendship and Influence, Rains All the Time: A connoisseur’s History of Weather in the Pacific Northwest and Artists in Their Gardens among others.
In the Long Way Home, Laskin begins the saga of immigrant men by starting with their childhood as they proceed with the journey to Ellis lsland.  The twelve immigrants move to find for themselves a new pace that can give them an opportunity to begin a better life but unfortunately, they return to Europe in a fight which had caused the death of many people and they must win to survive. Three of the twelve soldiers died while in the battlefield, two managed to win the Congressional Medal of Honor (Shidler 1977). They went through hardship and struggle to achieve their goals. For instance, one of the soldiers who an Italian immigrant called Nicole Rizzi said that, “I had become as vicious as the rest. Our nerves were mighty strained. We were crabbing about everything in general—hunger, cold and fatigue. Still, the last puff of a cigarette would be split up; the last bit of chewing tobacco was passed around; the last can of corned Willie shared. You see, we were all buddies.” From Nicole statement, it shows that the immigrants fought with original American soldiers shoulder to shoulder due to their love for their country and families.“ However, the author explains that all of the soldiers were transformed into new people due to their experiences.
The transformation that changed immigrant soldiers continue to exist among people especially in the immigrants families. It is a transformation that is still being felt in pain, pride and cherished memories. In following the history of twelve soldiers, Laskin talks about the story of immigrants and their generation. The generation that migrated into the united states in unprecedented number by the last century. According to the author, the generation of immigrants which streamed into the country have strived to support their families through struggling in labor and they willingly accepted to fight for their adopted country in the battlefields of Soissons, Belleau, Argonne forest and St.Mihiel (Shidler 1978).  The immigrant’s loyalty and will to fight for their adopted country therefore enabled them to travel their long way to a new home of freedom which they had longed for. A home which one of the emigrants called Morris Gutentag said “To go ‘home’ to the USA means more to us as immigrants fighting for our adopted country.” the spirit shown by twelve immigrant soldiers showed that they had faith in their new country.
The author used several sources to gather information and prove his argument that immigrants soldiers fought together with other soldiers in the battlefield to achieve a better home. For example, he wrote the book by researching and reading diaries, letters, and stories told by descendants. The quotes of those immigrants prove that the work of Laskin is convincing because they are different are from different people yet they carry a common point which shows how the soldiers struggled to fight for their country during day and night. Besides, the author managed to interview the foreign-born Doughboys who were alive by the time he was reaching to write his book (Shidler 1980). The Long Way Home therefore, contains the true story concerning American history and how they sacrificed to have a good nation that cares for each person.
Laskin organized his book” The Long Way Home” in a way that is comprehensive because it simple to read and understand. He has a flowing story which talks about how immigrants from different parts of the world seeking for a better place to stay but then found themselves in the world war that was facing the United States. The flow of the book explains vividly how the immigrants decided to fight for their adopted country because they had faith in it. Also, the author used a simple language that is clear and easy to understand. In general the book is well organized because it prose is lively direct and clear to read and understand.
In conclusion, the author’s book is good because it explains the history of America in the most comprehensive way. Besides, it shows how immigrant soldiers love the United States and are ready to fight for it. The Long Way Home reminds the citizens of America how their descendants willingly sacrificed their lives to create a good future for them. A future which they need to appreciate those who fought for it. Furthermore, this book teaches people that unity is indeed strength because the original American soldiers fought together with the immigrants without discriminating them. Millions of them died, suffered because of pain or hunger, cold or heat but they still stuck together in unity with one aim in their minds, to have a nation that has peace, unity and freedom. It is therefore important for the citizens of America to imitate the spirit and heart like that of soldiers who fought during the world war so that they can always live in peace and unity.
